the lion appears
large sleepy
eyes gazing
I look back affecting
calm, lean to breathe
into its face
as it opens its
mouth to chew
on my hand
like a dog not
yet biting down
but en route.
the naked power
terrifies me yet
I lead others
out away
who then do not under
stand why I yell at
them.
life and death I swear
but they hear only
that I have raised
my voice.
